It is suggested that businesses do no prematurely advertise an opening date. Instead, please wait until the certificate of occupancy has been issued. Applicants intending to install a sign, alter the architectural exterior appearance of the building or complete interior remodeling, must apply for all required permits. <<Link to permit page>> Existing buildingsA certificate of occupancy for any existing building may be obtained by applying to the building division and supplying the information and data necessary to determine compliance with the code for the occupancy intended. Where necessary, in the opinion of the building superintendent, two sets of detailed plans or a general inspection, or both, may be required. ResidentialFor all new residential structures, a certificate of occupancy is required before occupying. To obtain this certificate, the applicant must request an occupancy inspection after completion of construction. Business and/or IndustrialFor new buildings and alterations and changes in land use or building use, a certificate of occupancy is required. To obtain this certificate, apply for a building permit for a change of occupancy or request an occupancy inspection after construction is completed. Please be accurate in completing the application. Incomplete or improper data could delay the application. The applicant will also be advised by the building inspection and zoning division of the procedure to follow in the event a variance to any ordinance is required. Food serviceIf a business is a food service or food product operation, contact the Butler County Board of Health at 513-887-3111 to inquire if a food service license is required. A certificate of occupancy will be issued when an individual complies with all applicable ordinances. Conditional Certificate of OccupancyA conditional certificate of occupancy may be issued for a building occupancy or portions of a building. Such conditional certificates of occupancy shall be issued unless the building superintendent shall reject such application when not meeting the requirements the building code.
