Tornado season is almost here. The Fairfield Fire Prevention Bureau offers the following information.

1. The time during which tornadoes are most likely to strike is between 2 and 8 p.m., from April through July.
2. Tornadoes will usually come from the south, southwest or west at from 2 to 70 miles per hour with an average speed of  35 m.p.h.

Protective measures should include:

1. Stay away from windows.
2. Avoid corridors that may become wind tunnels, south or west openings.
3. Stay away from outside walls on south and west sides of buildings.
4. Seek shelter below ground level, such as a basement or a ditch.
5. Seek shelter under heavy furniture, such as a work bench.
6. Have a portable radio with you.

A watch means atmospheric conditions are suitable for a tornado.

A warning means a tornado has been sighted or detected.

Our local warning signal is a steady tone of a siren and will sound as a warning of an approaching tornado. Our local warning signal is tested the first Wednesday of each month. For more information contact Deputy Chief Dennis Glenn @ 867-5378.
