Employee benefits

The City of Fairfield offers an attractive package of benefits for its employees. Here's a quick summary:

The city strives to maintain competitive wage and salary structures by which it will be able to attract and retain qualified employees. The city negotiates with several unions which represent the majority of full-time employees, over wages and working conditions.

*Medical insurance

A competitive medical insurance package of hospitalization, medical, surgical, dental and prescription coverage is provided for full-time employees.

The city currently pays 90 percent of the cost of this benefit.

*Life insurance

The city provides, at no cost to the employee, life insurance in the amount of $50,000. Additional insurance may be purchased by the employee.

Retirement

Retirement benefits are provided by the Ohio Public Employees Retirement System (OPERS) or the Police and Fire Disability and Pension Fund. Benefits are based on years of service, age at retirement and final average salary.

*Holidays & personal leave

Twelve scheduled paid holidays each year, plus four discretionary personal days are provided except in the instances described below:

Police - 136 hours of holiday/personal time
Firefighter/paramedic - 173 hours of holiday/personal time

*Sick leave

Twelve days of paid sick leave are granted to each employee annually, except as described below:

Employees may defer up to $14,000, $18,000 if over age 50, annually in a deferred compensation investment plan.

*Tuition refund program

Employees are reimbursed for successful completion of college level, career-related courses up to six credit hours at the Miami University rate.

*Longevity award

In recognition of the service of employees, the city annually rewards employees with a special payment based on years of service. Employees with one to eight years of service receive $45 per year ($30 per year for firefighter/paramedics) for each full year of employment. For service of nine years or more, the payment is $75 per year ($50 per year for firefighter/paramedics).

Employee assistance program

The city provides, at no cost to employees, an employee assistance program. Trained counselors are available to help employees and their families with a wide variety of problems such as stress, work and family issues, substance abuse, relationship issues and more.

* This benefit applies to full-time employees only.
