Welcome: HR: Civil Service

How to apply for Civil Service positions

The steps outlined below will assist you in understanding the process of applying for a Civil Service position.

Step 1: Advertisement of Examinations

The examination will be posted and advertised. Exam postings can be found at the Lane Library, the City of Fairfield Municipal Building or on this Web site.

Most exams are advertised through the Community Press (northwest edition), The Journal-News and Cincinnati Herald. Other newspapers, such as The Cincinnati Enquirer and Dayton Daily News, are also utilized on occasion.

Step 2: Adhering to the Application Deadline

The exam posting and advertisement will include a deadline date for filing the application.

The application MUST be received and time-stamped/dated no later than that deadline date. There are absolutely no exceptions to this deadline for filing your application.

Step 3: Submitting Your Application

Applications may be downloaded and completed online; however, you will need to print and sign the application before submitting it to the human resources department. Your signature is required on the second and fourth pages of the application.

You may submit your application through either of the following methods:

Submit your completed application to the receptionist located in the City of Fairfield Municipal Building, 5350 Pleasant Avenue, Fairfield.

Mail your application to the Civil Service Commission at 5350 Pleasant Avenue, Fairfield, Ohio 45014. When mailing applications, please allow time for delivery, as applications must be received by our office prior to the deadline.

Step 4: Applicant Notification of Exam

Once the deadline has been met and applications are logged, the Civil Service Office will forward a confirmation letter to the address provided on the application, announcing the date, time and location of the exam to each qualified candidate.

Qualified candidates are applicants that meet the requirements of the job description for that particular classification (e.g., CDL, etc.).

After the exam, the Civil Service Commission will certify a list of eligible employees ordered by a score that reflects the exam results and other factors, such as seniority, relevant to that position. View current eligibility lists.
