| Civilian positionsThere are several important positions within the police department that provide a wide variety of services to the public and police officers. Juvenile Diversion CounselorThis is a professional level employee who works with first time offending juveniles. The program is designed to provide rapid intervention and supervision to juveniles who do not require the services provided by juvenile court. Learn more about the program. Pay range: $41,669 to $81,328. This is a Band 2 supervisory/professional exempt position. Salary increases are based on merit demonstrated through the performance appraisal system. DispatchersPublic safety dispatchers work on one of three shifts. They received 9-1-1 calls from Fairfield residents and business; dispatch police, fire and EMS calls; and inquire and input records into various computers systems. This is a role that is of critical importance, requires sound judgment and the ability to function in stressful circumstances. Full- and part-time employees are used. Pay range: $16.15 to $18.86 per hour. ClerksBoth Clerk I and Clerk II positions are used in the police department. Clerks work in our records section, property and evidence control, the operations division and the chief's office. New employees are employed as Clerk I. Clerk II is a promotion from within the city's current employees. Pay range (Clerk I): $14.38 to $16.92 per hour. Animal Control OfficersAnimal control officers are used to enforce laws pertaining to animals, pickup and care for stray or injured animals and to dispose of dead animals. Full- and part-time employees are used. Pay range: $13.77 to $16.33 per hour. Park RangersPark rangers patrol parks and enforce laws and park regulations. Full- and part-time employees are used. Pay range: $17.25 to $19.51 per hour. Police Service AidesPolice Service Aides (PSA) are available to assist various components and employees in accomplishing a variety of routine tasks that do not require a law enforcement commission, but may require specialized training or a security clearance. Examples include: scheduling and transporting vehicles for maintenance, radio repair and cleaning police vehicles as necessary; maintaining records concerning vehicles; assist the property clerk in maintaining, acceptance and disposal of items of evidence and other property maintained by the police department including transporting and recovering property from the crime laboratory; maintaining, certifying and calibrating various items of equipment including intoxilyzers, traffic enforcement equipment, such as radar and laser speed devices, evidence processing equipment; responding to routine public inquiries and handling non-criminal matters, such as hazards, unsafe conditions and nuisances.
