Low lying areas of Fairfield are subject to periodic flooding caused by overflow of the Great Miami River, usually from mid-winter to mid-spring.

The waters from the Great Miami River cause backwater flooding on Pleasant Run Creek for a distance of approximately one-half mile. It is in this reach and in the area along the east bank of the river that the greatest flooding occurs.

The headwater flows from Pleasant Run also flood this area, but not to the extent and severity of the Great Miami River. Shallow flooding situations occur where water overtops the banks of Pleasant Run.

Flood hazard areas

Two types of flood hazard areas are designated in Fairfield: the floodway and the flood fringe.

The Development Services Department will provide free pamphlets covering items of interest to residents of flood hazard areas. Information can also be obtained at the Fairfield Lane Public Library.

Flood warnings

When the area receives heavy rainfall, flood warnings are issued by the radio and TV stations in Cincinnati.

Channel 5 (WLWT), Channel 9 (WCPO), Channel 12 (WKRC), Channel 19 (WXIX) and WMOH all issue information as to the severity of the rainfall and broadcast flood warnings. Channel 18 on Time Warner Cable has continual weather information and issues flood warnings when they occur.

Flood safety precautions

Take these actions to decrease the potential of injury due to flooding:

• Do no attempt to cross a flowing stream where the water is above your knees. 
• Keep children away from flood waters, ditches, culverts and storm drains. 
• If your vehicle stalls in high water, abandon it immediately and seek higher ground. 
• Evacuate the flood hazard area in times of impending flood. 
• Cut off all electrical circuits at the fuse panel or disconnect switches. If this is not possible, turn off or disconnect all electric appliances. Shut off the water services and gas valves in your home.
