Trash collection is provided by the City of Fairfield through a contract the city has obtained with Rumpke, a private company.

Trash collection services are established upon the creation of a water, sewer and trash account with the City of Fairfield's utility billing and collection office. Click here for more information.

Along with regular refuse collection, items that can be accepted include wood, carpet cut in four-foot long lengths, appliances, bathroom fixtures, kitchen fixtures and furniture. Rumpke will pick up anything except for tires, lead acid batteries, used motor oil or other hazardous wastes, paint cans unless it is dry (please see below), refrigerators, freezers or items with freon in them.
Paint
Liquid paint cannot be included with regular refuse. However, latex and oil-base paint can be left to air dry and solidify to a solid waste. One of the best methods is to simply mix equal amounts of paint with kitty litter. Mix in the kitty litter with a wooden stick or paint paddle. Once the mixture is hard, just place it with your regular refuse for Rumpke pickup. If you have a large amount of paint, you might consider disposal at the Butler County hazardous waste disposal day. To Solidify Latex and small amounts of Oil base Paint:
Do:
- Allow the paint to dry by removing the lid and allowing liquids to evaporate in a well ventilated area. This works well for small quantities of paint (an inch or two in the bottom of the can), and can take several days.
- Latex paint can also be solidified by mixing in an equal amount of an absorbent material and allowed to dry. Use cat litter, sawdust, plaster of paris, oil dry, or vermiculite.
- Pour thin layers (about 1" of paint) into a cardboard box lined with plastic. Allow the paint to dry one layer at a time until all paint has hardened.
- When thoroughly dry, the remaining hardened paint should be discarded with your regular trash. Leave the lid off the can so the waste collector can see the paint is hardened.
Do not:
- Dump the paint on the ground or down storm drains where it will travel directly to surface and/or ground waters.
- Pour it down the drain. While small amounts of latex paint can safely be washed down the drain to a septic system or wastewater treatment plant, this practice should be kept to a minimum. Limit this to brush cleaning and clean-up. Pour no oil base products into drains.
- Throw liquid paint in the regular trash. It may be released from the can when trash is compacted and may seep out of a waste collection vehicle onto your street.
