Don is responsibile for managing all aspects of fire and emergency medical services for the City of Fairfield, Ohio. In addition to fire and emergency medical services, the department responds to water rescue situations, incidents involving hazardous materials, high angle rescue, improvised explosive devices and other emergencies endangering life and/or property.
Don began his career in fire service in 1970 as a volunteer firefighter for the Dunlap Fire Department in Hamilton County. He joined the Colerain Township Fire Department in 1973, advancing to the position of Fire Lieutenant/Training Coordinator. In 1981, he accepted the position of Fire Chief at the Hilton Davis Chemical Company in Cincinnati, Ohio, in charge of emergency response to fires, emergency medical calls and chemical spills. Shortly after his appointment as Fire Chief he was also appointed as the facility's Safety Director combining the responsibilties of both positions.
In April of 1984, Don was appointed as the first career Fire Chief for the City of Fairfield.
Don is a graduate of the US Dept of Justice/ Federal Bureau of Investigations Hazardous Devices Technician program (1993) and the National Fire Academy’s Executive Fire Officer Program (1995). In 2004, Don was awarded the Chief Fire Officer Designation by the Commission on Professional Credentialing / Center for Public Safety Excellence and continues to acheive the standards for reaccreditation since that time.
Don currently serves as President and Director of the Greater Cincinnati Hazardous Materials Unit serving the areas of Dearborn and Franklin counties in Indiana, Campbell and Kenton counties in Kentucky, and Hamilton, Clermont, and Warren Counties in Ohio. The GCHMU also provides services to the City of Fairfield, Ohio.
Don is married to Wendy and has a step daughter Emily and a step son Joseph. Don's only daughter Stephanie was lost in a tragic accident when the remnants of Hurricane Ike passed through the Ohio Valley on September 14, 2008. Don also has a granddaughter Abby born in 2008.
He enjoys woodworking, motorcycle touring, Nascar and fishing.
