Tornado Safety
Tornado season is almost here. The Fairfield Fire Prevention Bureau offers the following information.
- The time during which tornadoes are most likely to strike is between 2 and 8 p.m., from April through July.
- Tornadoes will usually come from the south, southwest or west at from 2 to 70 miles per hour with an average speed of 35 m.p.h.
Protective measures should include:
- Stay away from windows.
- Avoid corridors that may become wind tunnels, south or west openings.
- Stay away from outside walls on south and west sides of buildings.
- Seek shelter below ground level, such as a basement or a ditch.
- Seek shelter under heavy furniture, such as a work bench.
- Have a portable radio with you.
A watch means atmospheric conditions are suitable for a tornado.
A warning means a tornado has been sighted or detected.
Our local warning signal is a steady tone of a siren and will sound as a warning of an approaching tornado. Our local warning signal is tested the first Wednesday of each month. For more information contact Deputy Chief Dennis Glenn @ 867-5378.
