How to apply for an unclassified position
Unclassified positions do not require successful completion of a Civil Service examination. Examples of such jobs are all part-time, temporary and seasonal positions, positions in the Municipal Court, administration, professional and management positions.
To receive notice when a position becomes available, complete a job interest form online, download a job interest form or obtain a job interest form from the receptionist between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, at the City of Fairfield Municipal Building, 5350 Pleasant Avenue, Fairfield.

Generally, civil service classified positions are full-time positions requiring the passing of a civil service examination. Examples of such jobs are police officer, firefighter/paramedic, account clerk, clerk, meter reader, operator maintenance worker, and mechanic, among others.
Applications for these tested positions are accepted only after an examination has been announced.
The announcement will be made on the job opportunities page of our Web site and in the classified ads of local newspapers and will specify the period during which applications will be accepted and how to submit applications.
The full-time maintenance worker/laborer position is the only full-time classified job that does not require a civil service examination.
Persons interested in either a civil service tested position or the non-tested full-time maintenance worker/laborer position may complete a job interest form online, download a job interest form or obtain a job interest form from the receptionist between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, at the City of Fairfield Municipal Building, 5350 Pleasant Avenue, Fairfield.
When employment applications are being accepted, they may be downloaded from the Web site. After completing the job application, print the document and then include your signature.
