Appliance Disposal Guidelines and Options

  • Appliances and other bulk items should be placed at the curbside along with trash and recyclables on your regular pick-up day.

  • If an appliance is too heavy for one person to pick up, please call Rumpke at 1-800-582-3107 at least 24-hours in advance to make special arrangements.

  • Doors should be removed from appliances to prevent serious injury.

  • Appliances should be free of food, and all containers should be empty.

Rumpke appliance pick-up:

If disposing of an appliance that contains freon (such as a refrigerator, freezer, or air conditioning unit), the refrigerant MUST BE REMOVED prior to placing the item at the curb.  A tag or certificate must be attached to the item indicating that the refrigerant has been removed according to the Clean Air Act specifications.  Refrigerants may be removed by a heating and air conditioning contractor.  Once freon has been removed, place the appliance at the curb on your regular trash day, and contact Rumpke at least 24-hours in advance at  1-800-582-3107 to inform them of the pick-up.

Other disposal options:

A local company called "Unwanted Appliances" will collect appliances free of charge for all Butler County residents, and freon DOES NOT need to be removed prior to collection.  Please call 1-888-886-9268 for more information and to arrange a pick-up.

The Butler County Solid Waste District sponsors several appliance recycling drop-off days throughout the year.  These events are free to Butler County residents, and up to 5 appliances per household will be accepted.  Freon DOES NOT need to be removed prior to drop-off.  Please visit www.butlercountyrecycles.org or phone the Butler County Solid Waste District at 513-887-3653 for more information.
