Community Programs and Alternatives

Throughout history, the traditional duty of the courts has been the determination of guilt or innocence, with an appropriate penalty of incarceration and/or fines. Over time, societal changes and legislative mandates have placed an increasing responsibility on the judicial system to be mindful of alternative programs which offer long-range treatment. The goal of such alternatives is to minimize or prevent potential future involvement with the judicial system. The need to consider treatment options provides a complex challenge for courts across the country.

As appropriate, the Fairfield Municipal Court endeavors to address the need for alternative sentences, yet remain cognizant of the costs associated with the operation of a fair, efficient and effective municipal justice system.

Community Service
The Fairfield Municipal Court operates a Community Service Program that offers an option of community service in lieu of jail. The program is only available to certain first-time, nonviolent offenders.

House Arrest
The house arrest program provides the Fairfield Municipal Court with another alternative for sentencing. Under this program, defendants are closely monitored electronically to ensure they remain at home at the times required by the court.

Treatment Alternative Court
Fairfield’s Treatment Alternative Court helps non-violent misdemeanor offenders with untreated mental illness.
