Search tips

At its simplest, a search can be just a word or a phrase. But with the tips on this page, you can expand the focus of your query to give you more complete results.

These tips will get you started with basic searching techniques and acquaint you with the full power of the City's search engine.

Tip 1: Use Wildcard Operators

Asterisks (*) and question marks (?) are wildcard operators. Wildcard operators help you find pages containing words similar to a given word.

Ending a term with an asterisk will find matches on all terms beginning with that string.

For example, searching for govern* will return documents with govern, government and governor.

Beginning a term with an asterisk will find matches on all terms ending with that string.

For example, searching for *ware will return documents with hardware and software.

Tip 2: Use Logical Operators

Logical operators are considered to be the words and, or and not.

Using these operators can help refine a search from many general results to fewer, but more specific, results.

Typing and between the words in your search will return documents containing both of the terms you enter.

For example, searching for access and basic will return pages containing both access and basic.

Typing or between the words in your search will return documents containing either of the two terms you enter.

For example, searching for tax or income will return all pages containing the word tax and all pages containing the term income. All pages appearing in the result set need not include both search terms.

Typing not between the words in your search will return documents that do not contain that term you entered.

For example, if you enter bill not utility, only documents containing the word bill without the term utility will be returned.

When searching for and, or and not as actual search keywords (instead of the logical operator), put the term in double quotes for accurate search results.

For example, enter water "and" conservation tips to obtain pages containing the phrase water and conservation tips.

Tip 3: Use Proximity Operators

Search with the keyword near, rather than and, for words close to each other.

For example, both of these queries, system and manager and system near manager, look for the words system and manager on the same page. But with the near operator, the returned pages are ranked in order of proximity: The closer together the words are, the higher the rank of that page.

Tip 4: Use Parentheses to Nest Queries

Parentheses can be used to nest queries and extend searching capabilities.

For example, entering (teacher or education) and elementary school in the search field will return documents with either teacher and elementary school or education and elementary school.
