The City of Fairfield's volunteer program has announced the 2008 award recipients, honoring the many individuals and groups who donate their time and talents to help their community.
Volunteer Spirit Award – Kathleen Michitti
Kathleen is another volunteer who has served her community in numerous ways. She has volunteered her talents and efforts for the Fairfield Community Foundation. She has volunteered many hours for the Fairfield Women Club. Her fundraising skills for the Fairfield Women Club have resulted in financial gifts for several local charities, including the Food Pantry and One Way Farm. She has also volunteered for the Senior Citizen Luncheons, Fairfield Intermediate School PTC, Teacher Appreciation Luncheons, the Fairfield Food Pantry and Sacred Heart Church.

Youth Service Award – Katie Giuliano
Katie has been involved in Make a Difference Day and RASKALS for several years. She has also been very involved in Girl Scouts. As a young Girl Scout, she and other members of her Troop began a yearly food drive for Thanksgiving. She was also instrumental in organizing others to Adopt a Family for Christmas for those less fortunate. She has also helped serve food to those in need during her summer vacations. Katie has been teaching religion classes for St. Maximilian Kolbe Church. Her most recent project, however, has been working on her Girl Scout Gold Award. Katie raised $25,000 through various projects for a borehole in Uganda, Africa to provide safe drinking water to this group of people who were suffering from a variety of diseases.

Government Service Award – Debbie Rhees
Debbie exemplifies outstanding commitment and dedication to our community. She currently volunteers for the City’s Income Tax Department and ushers at the Community Arts Center. She also loves playing “Mrs. Claus”. She was a chairperson for Festive Fairfield and Reunion Fairfield when the City celebrated their 50th Anniversary. She also serves on the City’s Planning Commission. She has also volunteered for Fairfield City Schools and currently volunteers in the gift shop at Mercy Fairfield.

Community Service Award – Young Life
Young Life has grown over the years in numbers and influence among area high school students. The goal of Young Life is to build meaningful relationships between adult volunteer leaders and high school students in order to introduce the teens to Biblical principles that will help them to build a strong moral and ethical code for their lives. Young Life seeks to help young people find a healthy and productive way of dealing with conflict so typical at this time in their lives. Jon and Shelia Chambers and Jeff and Dee Sims have consistently and sacrificially given their time purely out of love and concern for others.
