American Public Works Association Accreditation

Residents of most communities can only assume that city operations are efficient, safe and cost-effective. Fairfield residents, however, can rest assured that operations in the Public Utilities Department are meeting the highest of standards. The department earned accreditation from the highly respected American Public Works Association (APWA). The Public Utilities department is the first Utility Department in the state of Ohio, and the twelfth nationally, to receive the prestigious award.

Accreditation is defined as” to certify as meeting all formal official requirements”. Businesses can acquire accreditation through a third party source to display they are providing services that meet or exceed expected management practices. More and more municipal organizations throughout the country are trending towards acquiring accreditation in order to justify service and operation within their community. The APWA is a third party source, providing an Accreditation and Self-Assessment program to public municipalities. APWA provides a program which formally verifies and recognizes public works agencies for compliance with recommended practices set forth in their created Public Works Management Practices Manual.

Fairfield's Department of Public Utilities (Water Treatment/Wastewater Treatment) provides water and sanitary sewer services for more than 44,000 domestic customers, as well as Mercy Hospital and 1,800 commercial and industrial customers. Department services includes drinking water production/distribution, source water protection, meter reading/billing, wastewater collection and treatment, maintenance of more than 350 miles of water/sewer main lines and all aspects of budget and capital planning to sustain operations and service to the community.

The department received accreditation when the APWA's team of professional experts from California, Kentucky, and Missouri completed a thorough evaluation/assessment of the Water Treatment and Wastewater Treatment process.
