Cyclocross Mountain Bike Race

Sunday, September 29, 2019

Harbin Park will be the site of this national Cyclocross Mountain Bike Race. Come watch some of the best mountain bike racers in the country competing against each other for cash prizes.

This race will feature nearly 500 competitors, in groups ranging from as young as eight years old to over sixty, with skill levels running from first time beginners to fully seasoned professionals. It is the second in a series twelve races in the Ohio Valley Cyclocross Series.

Cyclocross is an interesting and unique form of bike racing that takes place almost entirely off-road, but on bikes that are extremely similar to regular road bikes. Cyclocross started as a way for road racers to stay fit in the off-season, but everybody found it so much fun that it has blossomed into the fastest growing form of racing in the USA today.

The bikes differ from regular road bikes primarily in using slightly wider tires, and generally more robust brake systems. All sorts of terrain can be involved, including grass, sand, mud, and hills, along with other obstacles. Courses are usually designed to force riders to dismount and run for at least some distance, which is a legacy of “winter cross-training” roots.

Harbin Park is a particular favorite for regional riders. The varied terrain allows for interesting and fun courses, and the easy accessibility and ample parking makes the logistics relatively easy. The race is run by Queen City Wheels, which is Greater Cincinnati’s oldest and largest bike racing group.
