1. Who has to file income taxes?

All Fairfield residents 18 years or older (including part year & retirees under the age of 65), property owners, and business owners are required by City Ordinance to file a City tax return each year on or before the federal due date, whether or not tax is due.

All businesses conducting business in Fairfield are required to file a tax return.

2. What has to be filed with income taxes?

Business Returns:
           A copy of your Federal Return and completed Schedule Y allocation.
 
 Individual Returns:
           -W-2 form(s)
                     -Federal 1040 tax return including:
                          -Schedule A, C, E, F and/or 4797, if applicable
                          -Documentation for any income reported on your Federal tax form as
                           "other income" (Line 21 of the Federal 1040 Form)
                          -Any other federal schedules or forms which document deductions or
                           or additions to your local tax return
                          -Copies of other local tax returns or refund requests you have filed

3. What is the current tax rate?

The income tax rate for Fairfield is 1.5%.

4. When should income taxes be filed?

The City tax return must be postmarked by April 15, unless a taxpayer requests an extension. Extensions received by the applicable due date and extensions with a Federal extension are automatically granted.

If you are in need of forms or have any questions regarding current year estimated payments, the filing of the annual City of Fairfield income tax return, or prior year return(s), please feel free to call or visit the Tax Office.

The City of Fairfield Tax Office staff will be happy to assist with the completion of your individual Fairfield tax return at no charge.  Just bring all W-2s, 1099s, your Federal Form 1040 including Schedule 1, if used, and any other pertinent federal schedules to the Tax Office during office hours. No appointment is necessary.  

Filing early is highly recommended, as requests for assistance from the Tax Office increase dramatically as the tax filing deadline approaches.
