Major Gerold oversees the Criminal Investigations Section, the Crime Prevention Section, and the Juvenile Diversion Program. His title changed to Major in 2018 from lieutenant, along with Major Valandingham and Major Mays.

His primary responsibilities are to ensure that reported crimes are investigated thoroughly and efficiently, to use crime analysis techniques to identify emerging crime trends and develop problem-solving strategies to address criminal activity, and to identify persons responsible for repeated criminal acts and ensure that they are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. He is also responsible for the training and accreditation functions.

Promoted to Lieutenant in January 2008, Major Gerold began his police career as an officer in 1988. He was promoted to Sergeant in 1998. He has previously served as Commander of the Support Services Division and the Operations Division.

Major Gerold attended the University of Cincinnati and is a graduate of the Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command.
