Civilian Positions
There are several important positions within the police department that provide a wide variety of services to police officers and the community. Dispatchers
Public safety dispatchers work on one of three shifts. They receive 911 calls from Fairfield residents and businesses; dispatch police, fire and EMS calls; and inquire and input records into various computer systems. This is a role that is of critical importance, requires sound judgment and the ability to function in stressful circumstances.
Clerks
Both Clerk I and Clerk II positions are used in the Fairfield Police Department. Clerks work in our Records Section, Property and Evidence Control Section, Investigations Section, and the police chief’s office.
New employees are employed as Clerk I. The Clerk II is a promotion from within the city’s current employees.
Animal Control Officer
An Animal Control Officer enforces laws pertaining to animals, pick up and care for stray or injured animals, and dispose of dead animals on the roadway.
Police Service Aides
Police Service Aides (PSA) assist various components and employees in accomplishing a variety of routine tasks that do not require a law enforcement commission but may require specialized training or a security clearance.
Examples include:
- Scheduling and transporting police vehicles for maintenance, radio repair and cleaning
- Maintaining records concerning police vehicles
- Assisting the property clerk in maintaining items of evidence
- Maintaining, certifying and calibrating various items of police equipment
This is a part-time position to a maximum of 30 hours per week.
